Battle Creek, NE is a weekly updated long form web-comic from the mind of Mike Steele and the hands of Julia Philip. It follows the adventures of a less than talented no-name pop punk band from the back woods town of Battle Creek, Nebraska as they haphazardly find themselves invited to represent Earth in the galaxies largest Battle of the Bands.

The comic came about when Artist, Julia Philip, decided that she wanted to branch out from her own work and do something new and original with someone else writing, allowing her to focus fully on designing and art. After some time and thought, she decided to approach Mike Steele of Jim and Them, one of the host’s of a podcast she frequently listened to, and asked if he would be interested in such a thing. After discussing ideas and possibilities for the premise, they decided on an idea that Mike had been toying around with since High School in one form or another. He described it as a combination of “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy meets Marvel’s Secret Wars but with a bunch of bands”.

The two spent the next 5 months feverishly designing, writing, re-designing and finalizing everything for their new idea in hopes of putting something out there that not only makes you rethink the quality and scope you expect when you read web-comics online, but also something that would hopefully make people laugh once a week. After weeks of work and discussion, they we’re confident and happy with the final project and decided it was time to launch. They crossed their fingers, hoping for the best and excited for the future of the world they had created…
